Dear Friends, A couple years ago, I preached through the book of 1 John, and as I was preparing the last sermon, I had no idea what to do with the last verse in the book. The last verse says, "Little children, keep yourselves from idols." It's pretty straight forward, but it threw me for a loop because this is the first time the Apostle John had mentioned the word "idol." He writes 5 chapters, with 104 verses, and wraps up the whole book with a concept he hadn't even broached. John had spent 5 chapters helping Christians check the validity of their faith, overcome temptation, and live a life of love toward God and people... and now he mentions idols?
After much prayer and study it began to dawn on me that this final verse wasn't some superfluous tack-on, but rather a summary statement. The whole book had been about keeping yourself from idols, because that's what all of Christianity is about. God created us to worship and love him, so we cannot but worship and love. Either we worship and love God the Creator as the ultimate object of our affections, or we worship and love something created. Join us tomorrow as we start Part 1 of a 2 Part series on idolatry, called "City of gods."
Praying for you, Pastor Jan
