Adulting: Wisdom & Work

Dear Mosaic Family,

Tomorrow, we continue our "Adulting" series by talking about work. Preparing for a job, getting a job, and keeping a job are all part of growing up. Since work takes up so much of our lives, and so much of our lives depends on our work, the ancient wisdom literature of Holy Scripture has lots to say about it. The ancient wisdom literature teaches that work is a good gift from God. Ecclesiastes 2:24 says "There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil." Do you find enjoyment in your work?

One of the most counter-cultural teachings of Scripture on the topic of work is this: it's not just about you. In our highly individualist society, the idea that your job is all about you is deeply ingrained in us. When pursuing a job or a career, often the driving question is: how much will I make?

In Proverbs 10:5, we're told "He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame." What's fascinating is the use of the term "son." Why say "son"? Why not boy/man, girl/woman, person, etc.? And to whom does the "son" bring "shame"? Not just to himself. Laziness in work doesn't just bring personal shame, but it brings shame to the family and the community. There's clearly a huge assumption here: your work isn't just about you. It's also about your family and your community. Your work isn't just for you, it's also for your community. So the question we must always be asking regarding our work is this: what value is my work adding to my family and my community? How can I make myself more useful to the people in my life?

Once we begin to view work from God's perspective, we can begin to grow in wisdom in our work. Join us tomorrow as we unwrap all the incredible insights ancient wisdom has to offer us regarding this most important topic.

Praying for you,
Pastor Jan
