Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it

Dear Mosaic Family,

One of my favorite hymns is "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," penned by the 18th century pastor Robert Robinson in 1757. What's surprising is that he wrote this brilliant hymn at the age of 22 (oh the things that were accomplished before the constant stream of distractions offered by the Internet!). One of the motifs in the hymn that stirs my heart every time I sing it, is that of Jesus the Shepherd, and me as a dumb, helpless, wandering sheep.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood

I'm deeply moved by this motif, because of its uncanny accuracy in articulating my spiritual walk. I certainly was wandering from the fold of God, and Jesus certainly came and found me.  Once he found me, and brought me back to his fold, I'm still in dire need of his daily grace to "bind my wandering heart" to Himself. This is the part of the hymn that deeply resonates with me (perhaps it does as well with you):

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

If I love God, then why am I prone to wander away from him? Jesus answers this question and more in our text for tomorrow.

Join us tomorrow as we meditate on John 10:1-21, where Jesus reveals that he alone is the Good Shepherd of our wandering souls.

Praying for you,

Pastor Jan
